1. GENERATION AFTER GENERATION AFTER GENERATION AFTER GENERATION AFTER GENERATION
February 11, 2020
I am in the middle generation of knowing my grandparents when I was a little boy to now knowing my grandchildren. For most present day grandparents this lineage can span one hundred to one hundred forty years from the birth of one’s grandparents to the birth of one’s grandchildren. In each of these five generations we can see how the world has changed and how it has stayed exactly the same.
In the past one hundred forty years technological innovations have altered how we go about living our lives. For those fortunate enough to benefit from such innovations their lives have become easier with more opportunity to have more things and to experience life in many more ways.
While human beings have welcomed and benefited from technological breakthroughs there is one area in life where people wish the world of today would have changed but didn’t. Human beings in the twenty-first century still have to deal with the same type of problems that people living in previous generations has had to deal with. Some people today are no different than some of their ancestors when they mistreat the people they love, a neighbor, a co-worker or a stranger in passing. Some people today are no different than some people who preceded them when they hate people because they belong to a different nationality, religion, race, ethnicity or sexual orientation than themselves. Some people today are no different than some people living in past centuries when they mobilize and engage in warfare. Some people today are no different than some people who lived in the past when they pollute the earth. Our ability to see how certain aspects of the unwanted parts of life have stayed the same in generation after generation is essential if we are to change the world for the better.
What also has stayed the same is that human beings can show their good and decent side today as people did in previous generations. Human beings then and now treat other people with kindness, consideration and respect. Human beings then and now take into consideration the effect their actions have upon their fellow human beings. Human beings then and now have stood up and tried to change the injustices in this world and create a fair and equitable outcome for everyone. If a vast majority of humanity then and now didn’t act in ways that enhance life the world then and now would have even more problems to deal with.
Understanding our world is an absolute must if we are to rid ourselves of problems. No longer can we accept the problems people have as an inevitable and a normal part of human life. It has to change and it has to begin now. Life is too precious to go about our daily lives believing we cannot prevent problems from developing and cannot quickly remedy a difficulty when it does occur.
The answers and solutions to the problems that human beings have to deal with are out there. Hopefully, by the time the youth of today become grandparents, humanity will have broken the chain of generation after generation after generation of people being born into this world with the same type of problems that their grandparents have had to deal with.
2. WORKING TOGETHER TO AVERT A CLIMATE CHANGE CATASTROPHE
February 11, 2020
Humanity should have acted upon a changing climate decades ago. Unfortunately, what should have been undertaken never came close to actually being done. Here we are in 2020 and humanity is at a point in time where we still can avert a crisis. No longer can we sit back and wait for more information or for someone else to rescue us. Human beings around the planet need to work together for a better future in a united way like we never have done before.
Right now the solutions to a changing climate are out there and what we have to do is find ways to implement them as quickly as we can. Successfully averting the biggest threat to human life since our ancestors first walked on this earth is our present day imperative.
Thinking and acting in the same manner as we have done will not get us to where we have to go. There are many technological breakthroughs that have occurred in the past few years that will have a tremendously positive effect in preventing an all out climate catastrophe. The major roadblock that human beings have to an all out assault on this threat is that we like to do things in a similar fashion that we are used to and feel comfortable with. Overcoming climate change in a scant few years has to be the exception to doing what is necessary in our normal manner.
People are looking to local, regional and national governments to put their economic where-with-all force behind solving this problem. People are also looking to large corporations to adopt a clean energy aspect to their business practices. Both of these types of efforts are necessary and essential but putting in place real life solutions within the next couple of years also calls for human beings around the planet to do much more.
Back in the early nineteen eighties when it became apparent that the climate was changing there was not a big push to alter our behaviors because of a changing climate. Today we know that individual human beings have to be at the center of cooperative behaviors by reducing the carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere as well as removing existing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Everyday lost puts us further behind in what we have to do. Human beings everywhere cannot take a wait and see approach by letting governments, corporations and other individuals do most of the work because that makes other people fully responsible for how this all plays out.
The outlook for success will be greatly improved if we had 1 Billion (yes, Billion with a B) human beings around the planet volunteering 4 to 8 hours a month in helping to implement the technological inventions that have been recently discovered. Each month we would then have 4 to 8 billion human hours in a full out effort around the planet devoted to solving this problem. Over a year’s time that would be 48 to 96 Billion human hours engaged in this urgent situation. Since we have to do something profound within the next five years that also would mean that by 2025 there would be 240 to 480 Billion total human hours fully involved in removing carbon dioxide that is presently in the atmosphere and also helping to put in place newly discovered products that are environmentally friendly.
The volunteer workforce that is needed will come from every generation. One of the largest age groups where these volunteers can come from is our youth. There are 1.8 billion young people around the world between the ages of 10 to 25 and getting them to spend one day a month in service to the earth will be world changing. In fact our youth can make this a monthly family outing where a young person encourages his or her siblings, parents and grandparents to take part.
TIME GOES BY NO MATTER WHAT ANY OF US DO. TO CHANGE THE COURSE THE EARTH’S CLIMATE IS PRESENTLY ON WE ABSOLUTELY NEED ONE BILLION HUMAN BEINGS TO SPEND SOME OF THEIR TIME FIXING WHAT IS NOW BROKEN, AN EARTH THAT IS NOT FUNCTIONING OPTIMALLY FOR LIFE ON THIS PLANET.
We also need to think about the individuals and companies that invent these earth saving products. Doing what is normally done after successfully coming up with a new invention takes time to bring to the public. They start smaller and build up their production over time. Today we do not have the luxury of doing this when it comes to climate change.
Every individual and company has to think about the bigger picture just like Jonas Salk did when he never got a patent on his polio vaccine. Today’s climate change crisis requires the same benevolence of allowing people and companies to freely access their climate change altering technology for free or for a small licensing fee. Instead of one plant producing a new product and getting it into communities around the planet we could have in the same amount of time hundreds or thousands of plants in operation and a distribution network for it by the end of 2023 or even sooner.
While our website, onecommonpurpose.com, and our youtube channel, WE WILL CREATE IT™️, is devoted to all aspects of life, we will give a lot of attention to climate change. By presenting various new technologies that will have a world changing positive impact upon the earth’s climate and encouraging everyone, but especially the youth of the world, to become part of the one billion volunteers, we will show what is possible.
A BETTER LIFE AND BETTER WORLD WILL NOT AUTOMATICALLY HAPPEN, WE HAVE TO CREATE IT.
WE WILL CREATE IT™️
3. WE’RE IN THIS TOGETHER – IT’S ABOUT ALL OF US – WHAT A WORLD IT COULD BE
May 10, 2020
Many people think that too many of their fellow human beings do not care about other people. They see people rushing to work. They see people focus their attention upon what is personally important to them. What they are missing in their assessment is that the human mind often focuses upon the task at hand at the expense of the bigger picture. This doesn’t mean people don’t care, this means that their thoughts have a narrow frame of reference based upon what they are doing at a given moment.
If we could change one thing about human beings that would enable the world to see the good and decent side that lies within people around the planet it could be as simple as just having the pause button put on ourselves from our everyday affairs. Having an inner quietness and an ability to rid ourselves of the noises in our minds we can see how our fellow human beings everywhere believe that other people matter. Such a stillness can make the human desire to enjoy the time we have on this earth and the ability to live our lives with fewer problems become center stage.
Quiet reflections allow us to vividly see the kindness, consideration and respect that people exude and this is what matters the most in life. It becomes easy to appreciate those life enhancing qualities in other people when our minds are not consumed by our everyday affairs.
Appreciating people for what they do for others creates a connection to one another even when we do not personally know them. We no longer think of people by the group they belong to but in the psychologically and emotionally connectedness that makes their welfare just as important as one’s own well-being. We reciprocate their kindness in a genuine way rather than a matter of fact thank you as we move on to something else.
A mutual striving to do right for one another makes this world seem less harsh. Strangers are no longer considered a person you pass by, ignore and do not give a second thought about, they become a human being who matters just as much as your family members who you love and see day after day.
Thank goodness for so many people who believe that life is not about oneself but is about all of us. It is evident that many of our everyday activities have as its foundation this consciousness. The founders, volunteers and supporters of worthwhile non-profits have this consciousness. Every person who is trying to make their community a better place for all has this consciousness. Every human activist who is trying to alter the path for those who are mistreated have this consciousness. Every person who is trying to create a clean and sustainable earth has this consciousness. Every person who is trying to stop children from being bullied has this consciousness. Every spouse and parent who gives of themselves to their family has this consciousness. Every person who treats their fellow human being with kindness, consideration, respect and dignity has this consciousness. Every person who tries to do the right thing, even if they do not always succeed, has this consciousness. Our world is a better place because in so many instances people believe it’s about all of us.
The Covid 19 pandemic has not only highlighted the horrors of a pandemic, it has also brought into full view the caring side that human beings have for one another when given the chance. By quarantining ourselves and social distancing it has given people more time to reflect upon life and we have come away with this important point in time where people are in unison and collectively believe that we’re in this together and it’s about all of us.
When this pandemic ends we cannot lose the sense that the heartfelt connection to our fellow human beings is ever present as it had been during the pandemic. Having unity of purpose can alter the human landscape where difficulties are not something that pertain to other people but are something that we have to lend our collective efforts to. The small as well as the great challenges that besets humanity can be overcome when human beings are in this quest for a better world together and believe it’s about all of us. What a world we could have.
4. NEW INNOVATIONS CAN MAKE A SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN GREENHOUSE EMISSIONS
May 28, 2020
This is the first in a series of articles about new breakthrough innovations that can have an enormous impact upon humanity’s ability to adequately deal with climate change in the next ten years. While people all over the planet understand the devastating consequences of a changing climate, what will be presented here are the seldom discussed specific causes of greenhouse emissions and the recent technological discoveries that can reduce these emissions.
The reason individual human beings around the planet need to know what can be done to combat climate change is that all of us can be part of helping to implement these new changes. Yes, an individual or a corporation is the inventor of a new technological breakthrough and has an important say in the development of their discoveries. The problem that exists is that too often getting a better way of doing something will not be implemented in the near term on a worldwide basis because it can take years at best and decades most of the time for something to take hold when done in the usual manner.
Our planet in 2020 has a deadline of 2030 to get it right if we are to prevent the worst of a changing climate. While reading about various technological breakthroughs, contemplate how you and the people in your community can become part of the one billion volunteer force that changes our collective environmental future. By finding out which entities in your community are involved in specific products that play a key role in greenhouse emissions and talking to those entities about the environmental benefits associated with a new innovation that will lessen their greenhouse emissions, we can begin the process whereby community after community will be on their way to successfully meeting the 2030 deadline.
This website does not endorse any specific company or product over other ones. All that is presented here are potential options that can lessen greenhouse emissions. In addition, there can be other technologies related to making products that can reduce greenhouse emissions that this website does not know about and it would be greatly appreciated if they can be passed onto us so we can present them as another means to solving climate change.
1) MAKING CONCRETE
According to a couple of articles, seven percent of greenhouse emissions come from making concrete and five percent of greenhouse emissions comes from the cement that is used in concrete. Cement is essential in making concrete since it gives concrete its strength. Today we have other options that diminishes cement’s role in making concrete and these new technologies can play an essential part in reducing our annual greenhouse emissions.
A) According to its website, Carbon Cure Technology has created a process where the producers of concrete take CO2 that has been emitted by other facilities and use it to reduce the amount of cement used when making concrete. The CO2 in this process turns into minerals and becomes sequestered within the concrete thereby making it no longer a harmful substance. Carbon Cure not only reduces greenhouse emissions in the production of concrete but also sequesters CO2 that other entities produce.
B) According to its website, Solidia Technologies has developed a process to produce concrete while doing it with as much as seventy percent fewer greenhouse emissions than existing methods.
C) According to its website, Carbicrete has created a process where they have eliminated cement completely when making concrete. In this process they take a waste bi-prodcut when steel is made and combines it with CO2 that is filled in their concrete blocks. This process thus has multiple greenhouse emission savings because first there is no need to use cement and secondly existing produced CO2 becomes sequestered within the new concrete block.
2) MAKING STEEL
The making of steel contributes seven percent of greenhouse emissions. According to its website, Thyssenkrupp is a steel maker that has a multi-phase approach to eliminating all of their CO2 emissions by 2050. Thyssenkrupp has already begun their first phase where they replace their use of coal with a process that uses hydrogen. With this phase they expect to reduce their greenhouse emissions by twenty percent by 2030 with the rest of the savings coming in the other phases when they expect to become 100% carbon free in 2050.
3) ANIMALS WHICH WE EAT
Animals that human beings eat are responsible for five percent of greenhouse emissions. Most of this comes from cows which contribute four percent of greenhouse emissions. When a cow belches the cow releases methane which has more greenhouse emissions than carbon dioxide.
Research has shown that a small amount of red seaweed added to what a cow eats can reduce the amount of their methane that is released by 99%. While this seaweed is hard to come by in sufficient quantities that can be fed to our livestock, efforts are being made to figure out how to create enough seaweed to change this situation.
SUMMATION
When we add up the potential to reduce the amount of greenhouse emissions from making concrete, making steel and from the belches of the animals on our farms we can see the possibility that by 2030 we can reduce global greenhouse emissions by at least ten percent. To get there we have to think about how to implement these new innovations on a global scale.
5. THERE IS A WAY FORWARD: ENDING MISTREATMENT, DISCRIMINATION AND HATRED
July 6, 2020
With the black lives matter protests in country after country around the planet it is fully evident that humanity wants a new and better way forward. We have to treat all black people with kindness, consideration, respect and dignity. We have to end the mistreatment, discrimination and hatred towards all black human beings, whether that is by a government, courts, police departments, corporations, organizations or individuals everywhere on this planet. This is dedicated to that humanitarian objective as well as to other human beings who find themselves in similar circumstances irrespective of their nationality, religion, race, ethnicity or sexual orientation.
“Find the good. It’s all around you. Find it, showcase it and you’ll start believing it.
JESSE OWENS
There are many horrors in this world and one of them is when someone mistreats, discriminates and hates another human being. Being the victim of one such incident is troubling enough but when it is perpetrated over and over and over again it becomes an unacceptable weight that no one should have to endure. And when it pervades society to the point that an entire group of people have systemic mistreatment, discrimination and hatred aimed at them based upon their nationality, religion, race, ethnicity or sexual orientation it goes beyond any semblance of what a better world is about.
The way forward to end mistreatment, discrimination and hatred requires insights into the underlying causes of such inhumane actions. Before we look into it we need to think about life from the standpoint that for many people around the planet they will have a future they do not want to have (READ DAY 6 – A FUTURE NO ONE WANTS in JOURNEY INTO A BETTER FUTURE). When we can fully grasp that there are too many instances where human beings will have an aspect of their life that goes beyond minor inconveniences that come and go, we will be more prone to end the causes of such horrors.
Human life is like a two sided coin. On one side we have difficulties that are not only problematic but also make us miserable while on the other side life goes smoothly and is pleasant and enjoyable. Each of these polar opposites are often the result of the type of thoughts we have.
Thoughts are nothing more than the silent words each of us say to ourselves. When it comes to mistreatment, discrimination and hatred towards an individual person or a group of people there are specific silent words in one’s mind directed at certain people that makes it seem rational and reasonable. When it comes to treating all human beings with kindness, consideration, respect and dignity there are a completely different set of silent words associated with that mindset.
One of the problems human beings have is that the person each of us talks to more than anyone else is oneself. Everyday every human being is constantly engulfed in silent thoughts about something that has happened in their past, at that moment or they will be doing in the future. In addition, our minds are filled with thoughts about other people and local and world affairs.
Because we cannot go anywhere or do anything without having thoughts, over time we get lost in one’s own silent words to the point that we do not question or challenge oneself to the accuracy, factuality and whether the internal dialogue detracts from or enhances a person’s life and that of their fellow human beings. When this happens over and over again, we develop habits of thinking that may stay with us for a lifetime. For some people it becomes perfectly acceptable and absolutely correct in their minds to mistreat, discriminate and hate certain people. (READ DAY 30 – KEY ASPECT: THOUGHTS AND THE POWER OF WORDS; DAY 31 – KEY ASPECT: GETTING LOST IN THOSE SILENT WORDS; DAY 32 – KEY ASPECT: ACCURATE AND FACTUAL THOUGHTS; DAY 58 – KEY ASPECT: HABITS in JOURNEY INTO A BETTER FUTURE)
The following comes from DAY 34 – KEY ASPECT: ANTI-THOUGHTS in JOURNEY INTO A BETTER FUTURE
“So much of the animosity that people have for another human being or those who belong to a different group than they do stems from the thoughts that they have about someone or some group. They think about them as “others” and use language that is unflattering, disparaging and outright negative.
There is a great difference in how people interact with and treat someone when they use the words dislike, disapprove, bad and hate compared to using the words approve, like, good and love. No one can have the requisite respect and kindness for an individual person or members of a group along with wanting to associate with them when they internally describe others in the most demeaning of terms.
It is one thing to not like a particular action that a person has taken or to disagree with a point of view about a certain situation, but it is something completely different to have outright disdain based upon a person belonging to a different group or holding a different ideology. Breathing hostility into the air can lead to unimaginable consequences with far reaching implications. Harboring anti-thoughts keeps human beings apart and an inability for everyone to live in harmony with one another.
People who have deep seated anti-thoughts can justify such sentiments without any sound reasons. They have thoughts in their minds that do not meet the criteria of accurate and factual which often leads to actions that go beyond just words. Depicting certain individuals and entire groups of human beings as inferior, stupid, incapable to succeed and not like myself is a characterization intended to keep the target of anti-thoughts downtrodden and without the everyday rights to a better life. Physical assaults that break bones, death and full scale war between entire groups has been part of human history for far too long.
Those who hold such negative thoughts can find the least possible provocation for finding fault. They see a few instances of poor behavior by a single individual and believe that person acts that way all the time. They see certain behaviors by a few people who belong to a particular group and generalize it towards most or all members of that group. Magnifying any negativity out of realistic proportion makes getting along with their fellow human beings more difficult if not next to impossible.
The world will not get to where humanity wants it to get to until anti-thoughts are no longer a part of human consciousness. Sure human beings are one percent off and will not always say or do things to one’s liking, but to harbor disdain based upon disparaging thoughts towards an individual person or an entire group creates an atmosphere that is completely antithetical to a better life and better world.”
Another factor in mistreatment, discrimination and hatred comes from the verb “to be”. When you define yourself and one’s group as I am/we are and other individuals and other groups as you are/they are it is as if there is a line put down that creates not only a physical separation but also a psychological distance between human beings. Such a separation makes it easy to believe that what is best for me and the group I belong to is more important than what occurs to you and the group you belong to. The verb “to be” creates the rationale and justification for a self-centered approach to life.
While many people take the verb “to be” and use it to not treat others with the best of intentions, there are far more human beings who do care about all of humanity. By having a mindset that I am a human being and all of us are human beings it makes all of us equal in our minds and thereby eliminates the psychological distinctions that are the underpinnings for mistreatment, discrimination and hatred. Kindness, consideration, respect and dignity follow we are human beings. (READ DAY 35 – KEY ASPECT: THE VERB TO BE AND GROUP IDENTIFICATION)
What hurts every person in his or her ability to have a better life is not being cognizant of and fully appreciative of how each of us becomes affected by what we hear, see and read. Certain experiences have a powerful effect on us and are turned into the silent words that become part of our mindsets. For most people when they are treated well, especially by the people they care about the most, their silent words become life enhancing. For some people, and luckily they are in the minority, they gravitate towards something that turns them into a hurtful, angry and unrecognizable person that they never were before. (READ DAY 36 – BECOMING AFFECTED)
Can it be that the human DNA is naturally made up of showing kindness, consideration, respect and dignity to our fellow human beings. Having the silent words become twisted to where someone considers certain people unworthy of showing them their best attributes is where we have to give our attention in order to create a world where all of humanity lives in harmony with one another.
Problems are everywhere. Not having problems makes each of our lives better and the fewer collective problems humanity has the better our collective world becomes. In order not to have problems we need to do two things. When a problem arises we need to fix what is problematic as soon as possible so it does not linger or becomes larger in scope as time goes on. The other side of a problem is to prevent difficulties from happening in the first place. Looking at problems from this perspective gives us a starting point in how we can proceed from where we are now to where we need to go when it comes to difficulties in general but has a special importance when it relates to mistreatment, discrimination and hatred.
So what can be done to get those individuals who already mistreat, discriminate and hate certain people to change their ways while simultaneously helping to prevent other people from someday becoming a person with such a mindset. The following can hopefully be part of ending mistreatment, discrimination and hatred from the human consciousnessness: A BETTER LIFE PHILOSOPHY (DAY 51); ONE COMMON PURPOSE: WORKING TOGETHER FOR A BETTER FUTURE (DAY 76); COMMUNITY BETTERMENT PROJECT (DAY 77) ; A BETTER LIFE WILL NOT AUTOMATICALLY HAPPEN, WE HAVE TO CREATE IT (DAY 78).
Every human being has belief systems that they live their life by. Think what would happen when people all over the world adopted as part of their overall belief system “A BETTER LIFE PHILOSOPHY” that states “I will make life better for myself, others and planet earth”. Fully embracing such a consciousness makes it almost impossible for a person to mistreat, discriminate and hate a person or group of people no matter what the circumstances.
While most of humanity already lives their lives by “A BETTER LIFE PHILOSOPHY”, even if they do not call it by this name or definition, there are many individuals who do not. Understanding how each of us is affected in life, the silent words that develop because of our internal dialogue to our experiences along with striving to make life better for others besides oneself can go a long way towards changing some who harbor disdain and prejudice for those who are not like themselves. Changing some, though, is not good enough. We need an effort that is commensurate to world changing.
One of the most valuable commodities, if not the most valuable, any individual or group of people has is their time. We cannot replace time that has gone by no matter what any of us do. Our ability to use our time in the most productive manner possible is to combine our efforts in a communal way that creates positive change for an entire community or region. This is where being part of A COMMUNITY BETTERMENT PROJECT and having ONE COMMON PURPOSE OF WORKING TOGETHER FOR A BETTER FUTURE comes into play.
We can no longer infer that mistreatment, discrimination and hatred is someone else’s problem. No one knows which little baby boy or baby girl will grow up to some day believe that it is perfectly okay to think about and treat others in the worst ways possible. No one knows which student, co-worker, neighbor or the person you pass by as you are walking past them in your town has disdain for certain human beings for no other reason than they are not like themself. It is because of this that a community betterment project is necessary where people gather together to discuss this issue, find the methodology to alter it and convey this to one another throughout their community. Having a common purpose to develop a consciousness of inclusion instead of exclusion for every resident in each community throughout the world requires people everywhere to work together to see it through to its conclusion.
SUMMATION
When we look back at human progress over the centuries it took the time and effort of certain individuals to make it happen. Something new was created that replaced the old ways of living their lives. It didn’t matter whether it was a product that someone thought could be useful or a concept that enhanced human life, A BETTER LIFE AND BETTER WORLD DID NOT AUTOMATICALLY HAPPEN, IT WAS CREATED BY HUMAN BEINGS.
Going forward no one has the luxury of being a bystander in the process for making this a better world. The little things that occur on a daily basis are just as important as a monumental product that is invented or an inspirational message that has an impact on us that we feel it down to our deepest inner core and stays with us for the rest of our lives. WE ALL HAVE A PART TO PLAY IN CREATING A WORLD WHERE NO ONE MISTREATS, DISCRIMINATES AND HATES THEIR FELLOW HUMAN BEINGS.
6. CAPTURING CARBON
October 12, 2020
The industrial revolution that began in the 1800’s enabled human beings to have and do things like never before. To accomplish all of this we had to take carbon that was in the ground and burn it without understanding how this would affect the earth. Today we have the knowledge that half of the carbon dioxide that has been discharged into the atmosphere since the beginning of the industrial revolution still remains in the atmosphere with the other half being returned into the soil and waterways of the earth. This has played havoc with how our earth functions.
If we are to have a planet that can successfully sustain life we have to remove much of the atmospheric carbon dioxide that is the result of human activity. The following are some concepts that can sequester billions of tonnes of carbon dioxide that will make a significant difference in our efforts to combat climate change.
1) Seagrass
In an article in Good News Network titled “One Million ‘Wonder Plant’ Seedlings Are Planted In Wales To Fight Climate Crisis – And Create Healthy Seas” written by Andy Corbley dated March 15, 2020 describes seagrass as being able to capture carbon that may be upwards of 35 times the rate that a tropical rainforest achieves. This site does not know how much carbon could be sequestered by this method and where we need to put it, but it would be useful for those individuals and institutions who have this capability to figure this out and make it available to the public which could be the impetus for action.
Since climate change affects all of humanity there is a need for all countries around the planet to plant seagrass along their shorelines wherever it is feasible to do so. To achieve the maximum benefit from seagrass every national effort requires volunteers spending some of their time in this absolutely beneficial endeavor.
2) Spekboom
In an article in Future Planet titled “How Shrubs Can Tackle Climate Change” written by Alexander Mathews dated February 3, 2020 describes how a shrub called Spekboom takes ten years to grow to sixteen feet tall at which point it can sequester as much as “15.4 tonnes of CO2 per hectares per year”.
The South African government is implementing a program to plant one million hectares which is equivalent to 2.5 million acres. What this means is that when all one million hectares are created in South Africa they could sequester as much as 15.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide every year. Imagine what could happen if countries around the planet planted 140 million hectares where in ten years time about two billion tonnes of carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere every year (besides the CO2 that will be sequestered as the spekboom is growing to its maturity).
3) Rock Dust
In an article at the Energy Institute at The University Of Sheffield titled “Applying Rock Dust To Croplands Could Absorb Up To 2 Billion Tonnes Of CO2 From The Atmosphere, Research Shows” dated July 7, 2020 describes how a study at the University Of Sheffield found that adding rock dust to farmland can increase the already existing process by which soil absorbs carbon dioxide. They did this study in each nation and when you combine the world wide extra absorption by the earth due to adding rock dust the study estimates it will amount to 2 billion tonnes each year. There is also an added benefit in that this method also increases crop yields.
4) PLANTING TREES
In 2007 a nine year old boy in Germany founded an organization called PLANT FOR THE PLANET. The goal of Felix Finkbeiner was to get other kids around the planet to be a force to help alleviate the climate change crisis by planting trees which will sequester carbon dioxide. Since then this organization has grown to where there are now 88,000 young people actively engaged in not only planting trees but also getting other people to be part of this worthwhile and planet saving endeavor.
PLANT FOR THE PLANET had at one time a goal to plant one billion trees. They changed that goal to a ONE TRILLION TREE CAMPAIGN with the objective of achieving this by 2030. While it is estimated that our planet already has three trillion trees, this additional one trillion trees when mature will absorb enough carbon dioxide from the atmosphere that will go a long way towards humanity’s ability and an importantly essential component to adequately deal with climate change.
Summation
There are many companies that have made technological discoveries that can sequester carbon dioxide. Each one can help in the battle to avert a climate change catastrophe. The one situation they have is that they do not deal in billions of tonnes when they are constructed. Humanity is at an inflection point where we have to give our efforts in endeavors that will have a monumental ability to get as close to a 1.5 celsius degree increase in global temperatures. When we add up the benefits of nature’s ability to sequester billions upon billions of tonnes of carbon dioxide because of seagrass, spekboom, rock dust and one trillion tree plantings it becomes abundantly evident that these four areas need to be key components (along with technological innovations that reduce or eliminate the production of carbon dioxide when carrying out our affairs) in humanity’s efforts to combat climate change.
7. THE ROAD TO SUCCESS IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION
November 1, 2021
At the beginning of Steve Harvey’s Morning Radio Show he devotes a few minutes to discussing insights he has gained over the years. I was listening to his show on the morning of October 21, 2021 when he said “The road to success is under construction.” I found this very profound.
When I started to think about this it became evident that a personally better life for every human being is constantly under construction since the moment each of us takes our first breadth. The same can be said about human beings in each generation having been continually on a path to constructing a collectively better world.
When a road is constructed where we drive our cars, trucks, and buses upon, there are certain materials in the pavement that are better at reducing the wear and tear of the pavement than other materials. With better materials we will also be able to experience a smoother and easier ride where we do not have to navigate potholes or other bumps in the road. While we can quickly pass over or navigate around defects in the pavement, it sometimes seems as if there are other obstacles awaiting us further down the road.
Each of our personal lives and our collective societal world appears to operate in the same manner. Personal and societal difficulties are the human speed bumps and potholes that we need to navigate our lives and world around. While life often presents itself with a smoother journey at various points in our lives, too many times further down the road we find an obstacle in our way that makes life more daunting than we want it to be. It is in those unwanted situations that we need to reconstruct the road we are on so that harmony in carrying out our lives is reestablished.
The problems each of us have as an individual human being and the societal difficulties that impact our collective world have solutions to them. Finding those solutions and implementing them into our everyday world is the task we must undertake. Harmony is not that far off when we have the mindset to create it.
In JOURNEY INTO A BETTER FUTURE, on onecommonpurpose.com, the title of the last entry, DAY 94, is REACHING THE MOUNTAINTOP: A HOLISTIC HARMONY BY THE YEAR 2100 (THE TOMORROWS WILL NOT BE LIKE THE YESTERDAYS). This mountaintop represents the place where most human problems no longer exist. Climbing up this mountain is the road where each of us as an individual human being is on in our quest for something better than presently exists. Climbing up this mountain is the road where beneficial philosophies are discovered and adopted, where the beneficial products that contribute to an easier and better world are discovered and produced and where we come together as fellow human beings for the tomorrows to be better than the yesterdays. When we reach this mountaintop, we will know as a species that the road to success is no longer under construction (even though we will have to adjust various situations) because a better life and better world will be fully visible for all of humanity.
8. THE GREATEST COOPERATIVE EFFORT EVER UNDERTAKEN BY HUMANITY
June 10, 2022
What will it take for humanity to live in a world without the ever-present problems that have afflicted every generation? What will it take for humanity to consider every single human being as valuable, important, and deserving of a better life as they want for themself and their loved ones? The answer to both questions is THE GREATEST COOPERATIVE EFFORT EVER UNDERTAKEN BY HUMANITY.
Life can be compared to a multi-story building that has many problems. The owners of the building may put off fixing certain things because of money, manpower or the time involved in remedying the problematic situation. When a crack first appeared in the building’s foundation they may ignore it, do not find out what caused it, and do not determine what is the potential outcome if left as it is. When a hallway light is out it may not be fixed even though it could be as simple as replacing a light bulb. Obviously, finding the solution for a crack in a building’s foundation that keeps it upright is of more urgency than just replacing a light bulb that is not working.
Too often human beings put off fixing the fixable until after it becomes a crisis. Our personal lives and our collective world would be much better off if we acted as expeditiously as we could when a difficulty first appears instead of waiting until that situation escalates in magnitude far beyond what anyone ever thought possible.
In JOURNEY INTO A BETTER FUTURE, PART 2, NINE BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR A BETTER LIFE AND BETTER WORLD there are two basic requirements that have not been dealt with in a manner that they deserve and ultimately people living today are feeling the ripple effect that comes with such inaction. In terms of what will cause the most havoc and distress going forward is human beings are not doing enough in terms of a changing climate and this goes counter to the basic requirement for A CLEAN AND SUSTAINABLE EARTH. The other issue that creates turmoil in generation after generation is certain human beings mistreat, discriminate against, and hate other people based upon the other person’s nationality, religion, race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation and this is completely counter to the basic requirement for HARMONY BETWEEN GROUPS.
Both climate change and creating harmony between members of different groups are solvable. The ingenuity of various individuals and companies have resulted in alternative methods being discovered over the past couple of years that can replace and eliminate the causes responsible for a climate in a state of change. The sooner this new technology can be fully implemented around the world the better our chances become to avert a climate change catastrophe.
As for living in our present-day world where some human beings can be cruel towards certain people because of the group they are part of, there are far more people who show everyone kindness, consideration, respect, and a dignity worthy of their most cherished loved ones. The good that lies within the human spirit needs to be one of the key elements by which we unite ourselves around and enables us to move forward in a cooperative and harmonious manner instead of living with divisions that keeps us separate and unequal.
These two issues require an effort commensurate with the enormous task at hand. Too often people expect and rely upon the government, whether it is national, regional, or local, to find the solutions to everyday simple issues as well as the most distressful and most difficult aspects of human life. We also want the business world to step up to the plate and contribute their expertise to help make life better not only for their customers but also the community at large. Because of the enormity of a changing climate and people not treating others with the best of intentions, we need to go beyond what governments do and what businesses do if we are to solve climate change and end mistreatment, discrimination, and hatred towards those who are not like oneself.
This is where a volunteer work force comes into play. Look at all the good that can happen if one billion (at a minimum) human beings around the planet spent just four hours a month (that is equal to four billion human hours) each, and every month in a concerted effort to solve these two issues. Knowledge becomes essential if we are to make the necessary strides forward to remedy this most daunting of challenges. When we can understand these issues in more depth, when we can understand how to reach one another so people are not just sitting on the sidelines waiting for someone else to fix these issues, when we can understand what the solutions are, and when we can understand how each of us can effectively contribute our time to implementing those solutions, it will give us hope and optimism to march forward together in a way that the global community has never experienced before and will positively respond to.
Where will this one billion (at a minimum) volunteer workforce come from? To begin with the most important group that is needed is the youth of the world. They will be the generation that will benefit the most from solving climate change and ending mistreatment of their fellow human beings. By developing insights into these issues while they are young, they will be able to build upon what they are striving to accomplish and become more effective in creating a better world throughout their lives.
Since there are 1.8 billion young people in this world, imagine what could happen if only one million young people around the planet who are eager and willing to volunteer their time to solve these two issues did the following: Each person would reach out to four people they know who are also eager and willing to join in this effort, whether it comes from their family members, neighbors, friends, or classmates. Each of these new four people would then do the same and get four people who are also willing and eager to become part of this volunteer force. After doing this a total of five times of encouraging four people who then encourage four other people to spend some of their time being a force for a better world, the initial person who started this would then have more than one thousand people become part of this endeavor. When one million people do this the collective total would then reach the minimum desired one billion volunteers.
Another key ingredient to solving these two essential aspects of a better world is humanity already has millions upon millions of people who volunteer their time to various organizations and enterprises that help those who are having personal difficulties, who strive to resolve problematic issues that affect society and who help to keep the earth clean and sustainable. Think about how world changing it could become when environmental organizations who strive to solve climate change as well as other environmental problems also promote HARMONY BETWEEN GROUPS while simultaneously the organizations and enterprises that devote themselves to ending mistreatment, discrimination, and hatred also promoted A CLEAN AND SUSTAINABLE EARTH. This duo could have a profound effect upon what the human world looks like in the coming decades.
In addition, the religious communities around the world have continually helped those in need. When we look closer, we can see the good that they do when they collect food and clothing for those without these necessities. We can see that members of faith also come to the aid of people who become homeless. We can see that many who are religious also disavow hatred of any kind. We can see that many religious institutions advocate for a clean and sustainable earth. The religious community has helped those in need and has shown how to be a kind and good human being.
There are people all around the world who are doing their part in helping to create a better world for all of us to live in. When we combine the youth who have the potential to become a vibrant force for making positive changes in our world with the environmental efforts by those who are actively engaged in saving our planet with the people who are working to make this a world where everyone is shown kindness, consideration, dignity and respect no matter what group they belong to with the religious community who do good deeds for their fellow human beings, we get the most powerful and most united group of human beings that can have a lasting positive effect upon what happens on our collective planet. Once we combine these forces, humanity will be on a path where we can envision the day when climate change will be solved and people will grow up in a world where human beings no longer are mistreated, discriminated against, and hated because of the group they belong to.
Scientists tell us we need to reduce our carbon dioxide and methane emissions by fifty percent by 2030 if we are to be successful in keeping temperature from rising more than 1.5 percent above pre-industrial levels. Before we go forward with what we can do to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases that are discharged into the atmosphere, it was revealed earlier in 2022 that a few years ago scientists concluded that once humanity reaches zero new greenhouse gas emissions the earth will stop getting warmer in three to four years instead of the previously held belief it would take thirty years. What this means is of enormous importance in that there is greater hope that a concerted effort NOW to end greenhouse gas emissions will enable humanity to save our world not only for those of us who are alive today but also for future generations. Therefore, whenever you read or see a news report about new technology or people actively engaged in actions that will help the earth’s climate, remember that those actions help us get closer to the three-to-four-year period where the earth stops getting warmer.
While we need bold actions on a larger scale, every person in his or her life can be part of the climate change solution. The simplest thing every household and every business needs to do is reduce their use of electricity by ten percent and reduce driving their fossil fueled cars by ten percent. This means shutting off the lights when not in a room in your home and doing the same in offices and office buildings when a room or part of a building is not being used. When driving your car try to go to a couple of stores on the same trip and for businesses try to go to multiple places on a given trip. While some of this may seem inconvenient, it doesn’t take much of an effort to turn on and off a light or make fewer driving trips. Doing something in a new way can become a new habit that in a short time will not be thought of as burdensome and will seem as normal and natural as the old habits.
An essential and integral part of doing something about our changing climate is to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Trees have the capability to sequester large amounts of carbon dioxide and that is why there is an effort to plant one trillion trees. Since it takes eight to ten years for many new trees to reach maturity, at which point we could get the maximum amount of carbon dioxide sequestered, the one billion (at a minimum) volunteer workforce needs to be part of this massive tree planting effort.
Another factor in what human beings can do about climate change is that over the past decade there have been numerous technological discoveries that reduce carbon dioxide and methane emissions in the process to produce the products we use. We also have an ability to capture these emissions and reuse them when producing certain products or put them deep into the earth. The process for an individual or business to go from discovery to implementation for these earth saving products on a worldwide scale will take too long if we do it in the usual manner of fund raising, getting permits from local, regional, or federal governments, building a prototype model to show how it works, bringing the product to the marketplace, and then reaching out to individual entities that have a use for that product. The earth does not have “that many years” to wait for humanity to implement earth saving technologies, the one billion (at a minimum) volunteer force needs to be at the forefront of helping to speed up this process.
Think about how much sooner new technology would be in use if the inventors of this technology had help in doing paperwork and assist them when they deal with different companies and agencies. Imagine how volunteers could quicken the implementation of new technology in the world if they assisted in the production of these new products and informed the users of such technology of its impending availability before it is produced or that it now exists. Humanity can no longer sit on the sidelines when even the little things can be extremely helpful.
Because of recent discoveries in the following areas, we can now have a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions when they are fully implemented around the planet:
In the process to make CEMENT it contributes 7 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. There are now methods to make cement that can eliminate these emissions.
In the process to make STEEL it contributes 7 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. There are now methods to make steel that can eliminate these emissions.
Feeding livestock contributes 5 percent of greenhouse emissions with 4 percent coming from what we feed COWS. They have found that feeding cows seaweed will reduce their greenhouse emissions by 99 percent.
If by the end of 2025 the world’s cement and steel producers switched their production methods to these new technologies and the world’s cows were fed seaweed (hopefully there is enough seaweed that would be available for this) the world would have an 18 percent reduction in greenhouse emissions. Such a decrease in as short of time as possible will have an enormous positive effect upon the earth’s climate.
The following could become part of the human world and have an important part to play in the overall solutions to climate change:
Researchers in Shanghai and Sweden have worked together to create MOST, Molecular Solar Thermal Energy Storage Systems, which can store energy for up to eighteen years and then when it is needed it can then be used to produce electricity. This process does not need any batteries and solar cells. It also does not create any carbon dioxide emissions. While the research has only been tested on a smaller scale, it still needs to be proven that it does the same thing on a larger scale. Once this method works on a larger scale, this will be a major breakthrough in providing clean energy.
Scientists have shown that using quantum technology can create a quantum battery that will enable an electric car to become fully charged at home in 3 minutes and in the public sector where using a fast- charging station it would take only a few seconds. The lengthy time that is now required to charge an electric car is one of the reasons some people are leery of getting such a vehicle. While this technology is not available in 2022 every effort should be made to have it in world-wide use by 2025.
Another technology that has been discovered can enable electric cars to send power to the grid as well as become a backup source that powers your home. Based on the size of a country, a certain number of electric cars are necessary in order to supply an entire country’s energy storage.
A company is making electric scooters where you can quickly swap the battery. In overcrowded cities scooters may become the easiest way to move about and having a mechanism to easily change a scooter’s battery may be an essential component to using a scooter.
A process was discovered where the potential exists to make solar cells using perovskite that could run a car for 1500 hours and still have almost one hundred percent efficiency remaining. While this is not perfected yet, when it becomes feasible on a large scale it could exponentially help the climate change crisis.
There is a way to make smaller grids that can power villages in remote areas. This may be the simplest and easiest way that enables people to have clean electricity where little or none exist today.
Human ingenuity that takes us to another level of insight and understanding is behind every scientific discovery, especially when it comes to climate change. Once these discoveries are made it then becomes incumbent upon the rest of us as everyday citizens to become part of the one billion (at a minimum) volunteer work force. Solving problems is not solely about discovering the solutions, it’s about implementing them.
There are also insights to be gained and solutions to be implemented that can have a profound affect upon the human world when it comes to people mistreating, discriminating against, and hating someone or some group that is different than one’s own. Too many generations have expected their elected representatives to pass laws that would solve this situation. The shortcoming in this approach is that a law by itself, no matter how important and necessary it is, cannot reach human beings who harbor anti-thoughts towards people who are not like oneself. Until humanity adequately deals with anti-thoughts, we will not be able to live in a world without some people filled with ill will towards their fellow human beings.
There is a process at work that contributes to the type of thoughts a person has. The first important aspect of this process is that every person can become affected by certain things he or she hears, sees, and reads. When a person becomes affected by something it means a specific experience can have a powerful impact upon a person whereby that person develops thoughts about that experience that never existed before or that reinforces the thoughts and beliefs that a person already holds.
The reason thoughts can be so powerful is because thoughts are the silent words each of us say to oneself. If you ask yourself who do you talk to more than anyone else, the answer is yourself. Yes, those silent words and sentences you say in your mind is you to talking silently to yourself. As time goes on and certain words and sentences are silently repeated over and over to oneself, the repetition makes it seem that those thoughts are valid and real. Habitual thinking that disparages other people that has built up over time is a driving force behind anti-thoughts aimed at people who are not like oneself.
There is also another crucial component to a person developing anti-thoughts. The verb to be is a powerful force that contributes to a person not only identifying oneself with a specific group but also helping to create a mindset that other people are not like oneself. The following comes from JOURNEY INTO A BETTER FUTURE, PART 3, DAY 35: KEY ASPECT: THE VERB TO BE AND GROUP IDENTIFICATION.
“At an early age we are taught about the verb to be. We learn the words am, are and is. These three words have enormous power when they are combined with I, you, we, and they. I am and you are, we are and they are, I am and he is, or I am and she is when used in connection with a nationality, religion, race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation creates the underpinnings for people to think of themselves as not the same as someone else. It even occurs with political, economic, and societal ideologies, rooting for a sports team or favoring the community each of us lives in.
I am nationality A and you are nationality B. We are religion C and they are religion D. I am race E and you are race F. I am ethnicity G and she is ethnicity H. We are straight and they are gay. We are people who believe in these political, economic, and societal ideologies and they are people who believe in something different. We are people who live in this community, and they are people who live somewhere else. The distinctions human beings make based upon group identification all have the verb to be at its center. Such distinctions make it easier for some to develop anti-thoughts about those who are different.”
THE ONLY VERB TO BE THAT CAN UNITE HUMANITY IS “I AM A HUMAN BEING” AND “ALL OF US ARE HUMAN BEINGS”.
Just as the one billion (at a minimum) volunteer workforce needs to be an essential component in fighting climate change, they also need to be at the center of creating a world where human beings do not mistreat, discriminate against, and hate people who are not like themselves. While in today’s world in 2022 we may not reach all the individuals who have negative thoughts and beliefs about those who belong to a different group than oneself, we can have a positive and thought changing impact upon many of the people who hold an anti-thought mindset.
Most importantly though, we have the capability to help the young to never become a human being with a mindset filled with anti-thoughts about their fellow human beings. We can point out to them that the thoughts that they have are nothing more than each of us talking silently to oneself. We can explain to the young that certain things that we see, hear, and read can affect how they think and if those thoughts are repeatedly said to oneself over time, then such habitual thinking becomes ingrained within their minds. We can give the young the insights that any thought that is repeated often enough makes that thought seem real and valid in a person’s mind, even if it is not. Knowing that habitual thinking will determine whether a person becomes a kind or unkind person towards people who are not like oneself, such insights will hopefully make an impact upon the young so that they never harbor anti-thoughts towards anyone. We also need to explain to the young how the verb to be can become divisive if they are not careful.
When people are young, many of their lifelong belief systems often take hold. Human beings are exposed to religious philosophies, nationalistic philosophies, political philosophies, financial philosophies, and legal philosophies with certain philosophic belief systems eventually striking a chord more than other belief systems within each of us. Gravitating towards a particular philosophical belief occurs because of the thoughts that each of us have about that specific philosophy.
Many human beings come to believe wholeheartedly in a specific philosophical belief system and cannot find any possibility of uniting with people who have a different philosophical belief. There is no room in their mindset, their thoughts, that other philosophical beliefs have merit and because of this people often cannot find a compromise solution to the problems that afflict humanity. What if there was one overarching belief system that could be a unifying force that could change our divisive thinking and behaviors, especially when it comes to climate change and people mistreating, discriminating against, and hating people who are of a different nationality, religion, race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation than oneself. What if this one belief system would apply to every individual person, to every group that human beings belong to, and to every era in which people are born into. A BETTER LIFE PHILOSOPHY which states “I WILL MAKE LIFE BETTER FOR MYSELF, OTHERS, AND PLANET EARTH” can accomplish this.
A BETTER LIFE PHILOSOPHY will give us a focus as to what we are trying to achieve in our lives – making life better for oneself, helping to make life better for our fellow human beings, and helping to create a clean and sustainable earth. This belief system will be able to tie together the most positive, life enhancing, and cherished beliefs already held by human beings around the planet. This belief system takes nothing away from the life enhancing beliefs that have been passed on from generation to generation. (Read more about this in JOURNEY INTO A BETTER FUTURE, PART 3, DAY 51 – KEY ASPECT: A BETTER LIFE PHILOSOPHY)
Every human being can have an influence right where they live. When enough community citizens reach out to the people they go to school with, the people they work with, and the people they are neighbors with, people in the community will be able to envision a point in time where a community wide project of people working together to do their part in solving climate change and ending mistreatment, discrimination, and hatred towards their fellow human beings will be successful. This is what ONE COMMON PURPOSE: WORKING TOGETHER FOR A BETTER FUTURE and COMMUNITY BETTERMENT PROJECT are about. (Read more about this in JOURNEY INTO A BETTER FUTURE, PART 5, DAY 76 – ONE COMMON PURPOSE: WORKING TOGETHER FOR A BETTER FUTURE and DAY 77 – COMMUNITY BETTERMENT PROJECT)
SUMMATION
FOR THE YOUTH OF THE WORLD:
SOME WILL SAY WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO ACHIEVE IS NOT DOABLE AND THAT IS WHY I AM SITTING ON THE SIDELINES. ASK THEM HOW DO THEY KNOW WHAT IS POSSIBLE UNTIL YOU TRY TO SOLVE OUR PROBLEMS.
SOME WILL SAY THAT I BELIEVE IN WHAT YOU ARE DOING BUT I DO NOT HAVE THE TIME TO BE PART OF THE SOLUTION. SOME PEOPLE WILL ACTUALLY NOT HAVE THE TIME BUT ASK THEM COULD THEY FIND ONE OR TWO HOURS TWICE A MONTH TO LEARN ABOUT WHAT WE ARE DOING TO SOLVE THESE PROBLEMS AND THEN PASS ON THIS INFORMATION TO YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS, FRIENDS, NEIGHBORS AND CO-WORKERS. THE MORE PEOPLE THAT KNOW ABOUT WHAT IS BEING DONE TO SOLVE OUR PROBLEMS, THE MORE LIKELY IT BECOMES THAT OTHERS WILL JOIN IN THIS EFFORT TO CREATE A BETTER WORLD.
NEVER, NEVER, AND NEVER GIVE UP BELIEVING THAT YOU CAN NOT ONLY MAKE A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE IN YOUR OWN LIFE, ALSO BELIEVE IN YOUR ABILITY TO MAKE A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF OTHERS AND YOUR ABILITY TO BECOME PART OF A WORLD CHANGING EFFORT WITH PEOPLE LIKE YOURSELF. THERE IS NO REASON THAT A WORLDWIDE CONCERTED EFFORT CAN CREATE A WORLD FAR BETTER THAN THE ONE YOU WERE BORN INTO. THE FUTURE WORLD IS YOURS TO CREATE. DO NOT WASTE THIS OPPORTUNITY.
